    A Multiparameter, Numerical Stability Analysis of a Standing Cantilever Conveying Fluid

    In this paper, we numerically examine the stability of a standing cantilever conveying fluid in a multiparameter space. Based on nonlinear beam theory, our mathematical model turns out to be replete with exciting behavior, some of which was totally unexpected and novel, and some of which confirm our intuition as well as the work of others. The numerical bifurcation results obtained from applying the Library of Continuation Algorithms (LOCA) reveal a plethora of one, two, and higher codimension bifurcations. For a vertical or standing cantilever beam, bifurcations to buckled solutions (via symmetry breaking) and oscillating solutions are detected as a function of gravity and the fluid-structure interaction. The unfolding of these results as a function of the orientation of the beam compared to gravity is also revealed

    Dissipation-Induced Heteroclinic Orbits in Tippe Tops

    This paper demonstrates that the conditions for the existence of a dissipation-induced heteroclinic orbit between the inverted and noninverted states of a tippe top are determined by a complex version of the equations for a simple harmonic oscillator: the modified Maxwell–Bloch equations. A standard linear analysis reveals that the modified Maxwell–Bloch equations describe the spectral instability of the noninverted state and Lyapunov stability of the inverted state. Standard nonlinear analysis based on the energy momentum method gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a dissipation-induced connecting orbit between these relative equilibria

    Tippe Top Inversion as a Dissipation-Induced Instability

    By treating tippe top inversion as a dissipation-induced instability, we explain tippe top inversion through a system we call the modified Maxwell--Bloch equations. We revisit previous work done on this problem and follow Or's mathematical model [SIAM J. Appl. Math., 54 (1994), pp. 597--609]. A linear analysis of the equations of motion reveals that the only equilibrium points correspond to the inverted and noninverted states of the tippe top and that the modified Maxwell--Bloch equations describe the linear/spectral stability of these equilibria. We supply explicit criteria for the spectral stability of these states. A nonlinear global analysis based on energetics yields explicit criteria for the existence of a heteroclinic connection between the noninverted and inverted states of the tippe top. This criteria for the existence of a heteroclinic connection turns out to agree with the criteria for spectral stability of the inverted and noninverted states. Throughout the work we support the analysis with numerical evidence and include simulations to illustrate the nonlinear dynamics of the tippe top

    Domestic well vulnerability to drought duration and unsustainable groundwater management in California's Central Valley

    Millions of Californians access drinking water via domestic wells, which are vulnerable to drought and unsustainable groundwater management. Groundwater overdraft and the possibility of longer drought duration under climate change threatens domestic well reliability, yet we lack tools to assess the impact of such events. Here, we leverage 943 469 well completion reports and 20 years of groundwater elevation data to develop a spatially-explicit domestic well failure model covering California's Central Valley. Our model successfully reproduces the spatial distribution of observed domestic well failures during the severe 2012-2016 drought (n = 2027). Next, the impact of longer drought duration (5-8 years) on domestic well failure is evaluated, indicating that if the 2012-2016 drought would have continued into a 6 to 8 year long drought, a total of 4037-5460 to 6538-8056 wells would fail. The same drought duration scenarios with an intervening wet winter in 2017 lead to an average of 498 and 738 fewer well failures. Additionally, we map vulnerable wells at high failure risk and find that they align with clusters of predicted well failures. Lastly, we evaluate how the timing and implementation of different projected groundwater management regimes impact groundwater levels and thus domestic well failure. When historic overdraft persists until 2040, domestic well failures range from 5966 to 10 466 (depending on the historic period considered). When sustainability is achieved progressively between 2020 and 2040, well failures range from 3677 to 6943, and from 1516 to 2513 when groundwater is not allowed to decline after 2020

    DevOps: Concepts, Practices, Tools, Benefits and Challenges

    DevOps, originated in the context of agile software development, seems an appropriate approach to enable the continuous delivery and deployment of working software in small releases. Organizations are taking significant interest in adopting DevOps ways of working. The interest is there, however the challenge is how to effectively adopt DevOps in practice? Before disembarking on the journey of DevOps, there is a need to clearly understand the DevOps concepts, practice, tools, benefits and underlying challenges. Thus, in order to address the research question in hand, this paper adopts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to identify, review and synthesize the relevant studies published in public domain between: 2010-2016. SLR approach was applied to initially identify a set of 450 papers. Finally, 30 of 450 relevant papers were selected and reviewed to identify the eight key DevOps concepts, twenty practices, and a twelve categories tools. The research also identified seventeen benefits of using DevOps approach for application development and encountered four known challenges. The results of this review will serve as a knowledge base for researchers and practitioners, which can be used to effectively understand and establish the integrated DevOps capability in the local context

They maintain a fixed position relative to their neighbors, intimately linked through growth and differentiation. The mediator of this connection, the pectin-rich middle lamella, is deposited during cell division and maintained throughout the cell's life to protect tissue integrity. The maintenance of adhesion requires cell wall modification and is dependent on the actin cytoskeleton. There are developmental processes that require cell separation, such as organ abscission, dehiscence, and ripening. In these instances, the pectin-rich middle lamella must be actively altered to allow cell separation, a process which also requires cell wall modification. In this review, we will focus on the role of pectin and its modification in cell adhesion and separation. Recent insights gained in pectin gel mechanics will be discussed in relation to existing knowledge of pectin chemistry as it relates to cell adhesion. As a whole, we hope to begin defining the physical mechanisms behind a cells' ability to hang on, and how it lets go.The writing of this review was carried out with the help of grant BB-L002884-1 (BBSRC, UK)

    Enhanced Cooling of Laptop Computer for Improvement of Processing Performance

    A major problems in the operation of laptop computers is overheating since it can affect the performance and stability, sometimes leading to system crash and hardware fatality. The objective of this work was to study the thermal behavior inside a laptop computer and to test the effectiveness of aproposed cooling method to overcome overheating problem. The proposed cooling system contained a thermoelectric device that reduced the intake air temperature into the laptop internal cooling system. An external exhaust blower, located at the exhaust air outlet of the laptop, was mounted to ensure sufficient air flow rate delivered by the cooling system. To assess the effectiveness of the system, temperatures of critical components in the computer were measured. It was found from the study that, under extreme utilization situation, the temperature of the graphic processing unit could increase to 99B0;C. The proposed cooling system could bring down the temperature by up to 6B0;C

    Impact of Caesarean section on subsequent fertility: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

    STUDY QUESTION: Is there an association between a Caesarean section and subsequent fertility? SUMMARY ANSWER: Most studies report that fertility is reduced after Caesarean section compared with vaginal delivery. However, studies with a more robust design show smaller effects and it is uncertain whether the association is causal. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: A previous systematic review published in 1996 summarizing six studies including 85 728 women suggested that Caesarean section reduces subsequent fertility. The included studies suffer from severe methodological limitations. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies comparing subsequent reproductive outcomes of women who had a Caesarean section with those who delivered vaginally. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Searches of Cochrane Library, Medline, Embase, CINAHL Plus and Maternity and Infant Care databases were conducted in December 2011 to identify randomized and non-randomized studies that compared the subsequent fertility outcomes after a Caesarean section and after a vaginal delivery. Eighteen cohort studies including 591 850 women matched the inclusion criteria. Risk of bias was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS). Data extraction was done independently by two reviewers. The meta-analysis was based on a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed to assess whether the estimated effect was influenced by parity, risk adjustment, maternal choice, cohort period, and study quality and size. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: The impact of Caesarean section on subsequent pregnancies could be analysed in 10 studies and on subsequent births in 16 studies. A meta-analysis suggests that patients who had undergone a Caesarean section had a 9% lower subsequent pregnancy rate [risk ratio (RR) 0.91, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.87, 0.95)] and 11% lower birth rate [RR 0.89, 95% CI (0.87, 0.92)], compared with patients who had delivered vaginally. Studies that controlled for maternal age or specifically analysed primary elective Caesarean section for breech delivery, and those that were least prone to bias according to the NOS reported smaller effects. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: There is significant variation in the design and methods of included studies. Residual bias in the adjusted results is likely as no study was able to control for a number of important maternal characteristics, such as a history of infertility or maternal obesity. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Further research is needed to reduce the impact of selection bias by indication through creating more comparable patient groups and applying risk adjustment

    A Paradox of State-Dependent Diffusion and How to Resolve It

    Consider a particle diffusing in a confined volume which is divided into two equal regions. In one region the diffusion coefficient is twice the value of the diffusion coefficient in the other region. Will the particle spend equal proportions of time in the two regions in the long term? Statistical mechanics would suggest yes, since the number of accessible states in each region is presumably the same. However, another line of reasoning suggests that the particle should spend less time in the region with faster diffusion, since it will exit that region more quickly. We demonstrate with a simple microscopic model system that both predictions are consistent with the information given. Thus, specifying the diffusion rate as a function of position is not enough to characterize the behaviour of a system, even assuming the absence of external forces. We propose an alternative framework for modelling diffusive dynamics in which both the diffusion rate and equilibrium probability density for the position of the particle are specified by the modeller. We introduce a numerical method for simulating dynamics in our framework that samples from the equilibrium probability density exactly and is suitable for discontinuous diffusion coefficients.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures.     Case Report: An Undiagnosed Bladder Diverticulum Resulting in Foley Catheter Perforation During Cesarean Section

    A bladder diverticulum is diagnosed when herniated bladder mucosa forms an outpouching from the bladder. Bladder diverticula are uncommon and are significantly more common in males. The following case presents a patient with an undiagnosed bladder diverticulum which was incidentally perforated during foley catheter placement for a repeat cesarean section. The diagnosis can be difficult in those who are asymptomatic and lack risk factors, such as the following patient
